Trek Overview: A Cultural and Wilderness Traverse through Ladakh’s Hidden Valleys
This 6-day trek is a stunning exploration of Hemis National Park and the adjoining valleys, weaving through traditional Ladakhi villages, high mountain passes, and ancient transhumance routes used by shepherds and their livestock. Itinerary
Day 1: Leh (3,500 m) – Rumbak (3,980 m)
- Drive: 1.5 hours (Leh to Zingchen)
- Trek: 2–3 hours from Zingchen to Rumbak
- Trail: Gradual ascent through a narrow gorge, excellent chances of spotting ibex or blue sheep.
- Overnight: Homestay in Rumbak or camp.
Day 2: Rumbak – Stok La (4,850 m) – Mankarmo (4,300 m)
- Trek: 7–8 hours
- Highlights:
- Tough ascent to Stok La with fantastic views.
- Steep descent into Mankarmo, a scenic grazing valley with stream crossings.
- Wildlife: Likely to see golden eagles, lammergeiers, and blue sheep.
- Overnight: Camp at Mankarmo.
Day 3: Mankarmo – Matho La (4,960 m) – Gangpo Chay (Matho Phu)
- Trek: 6–7 hours
- Route:
- Continue southeast up to Matho La, another high pass with broad panoramic views.
- Descend into Matho Phu (Gangpo Chay) with its wide grazing pastures.
- Overnight: Camp in Gangpo Chay.
Day 4: Gangpo Chay – Shang La (4,900 m) – Shang Phu
- Trek: 6–7 hours
- Route:
- Ascend gradually to Shang La and descend into the wild and beautiful Shang Phu valley.
- This area is remote and excellent for wildlife sightings.
- Overnight: Camp in Shang Phu.
Day 5: Shang Phu – Chokdo (3,800 m)
- Trek: 4–5 hours
- Route:
- Descend gently along the Shang River.
- Reach Chokdo by afternoon, a small village with road access.
- Overnight: Camp or local guesthouse in Chokdo.
Day 6: Chokdo – Leh
- Drive: 2–2.5 hours
- Optional Stop: Hemis Monastery (en route)
